Flyers trade Ronnie Attard to Oilers in AHL defenseman swap

Ronnie Attard, a defenseman in the Flyers bubble for several years, has been traded to the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced Monday evening.

In return, the Flyers get defenseman Ben Gleason, essentially in a one-for-one trade of AHL defensemen.

Gleason, 26, has been a consistent producer in the AHL, posting a 32-point, plus-8 campaign with the Oilers’ affiliate Bakersfield Condors last season, but has not played in the NHL for a brief stretch of four games with the Dallas Stars in November 2018.

Attard, 25, played with the Flyers for 12 games last season and was on the fringes of a potential NHL depth role for a while, but never fully broke through.

A former third-round pick in 2019 (72nd overall), Attard joined the Flyers at the end of the 2021-22 season after finishing his college career with Western Michigan, but then spent most of the next two years getting minor league reps with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Attard had 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points and a plus-4 rating in 48 games with the Phantoms last season, but was never able to find that extra gear for the next level and fell short to make a big impact at training camp. a few months ago.

But maybe Edmonton presents a new start and a new chance.
