It was one of more than 1,000 comments, all speaking of Popovics’ generosity, kindness and integrity. Even the staff at Double Trouble State Park spoke about him: “On behalf of the staff at Double Trouble State Park, we extend our condolences to Bob’s family, extended family and friends. We will miss him. »

“There is no other way to describe Bob Popovics than to say he is the most inspiring and innovative saltwater fly tyer of all time,” said Ross Purnell, editor-in-chief and editor of Fly Fisherman magazine in a comment sent to JerseyShoreOnline.com. “Over 20 years ago, he pioneered the use of epoxy and silicone to tie imitation baitfish and published with Ed Jaworowski the book Pop Fleyes (2001). He then moved on to light-cured acrylics and became an expert in using bucktail to effectively tie giant, lifelike baitfish imitations that carry no water and are easy to cast. He described his most recent revelations about materials and design techniques with author Jay Nichols in Fleye Design (2016).

He was named No. 33 in a 2018 “The 50 Most Influential Fly Fishers” article in this magazine.

Popovics was famous for teaching his techniques, which increased the number of fishermen in the area.

He had been a founder or advisory member of several local fishing organizations. Additionally, he was inducted into the North American Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum Hall of Fame in 2014.

The Catskills Fly Fishing Center & Museum (CFFCM) website states, “His knowledge of these fish and their habits made him a master fisherman. His ability to imagine new ways to tie flies made him one of the most influential saltwater fly tyers. Popovics’ book, “Pop Fleyes: Bob Popovics’s Approach to Saltwater Fly Design,” co-authored by Ed Jaworowski, revolutionized saltwater fly fishing with a suite of designs using new techniques and materials to produce realistic imitations of Atlantic forage fish. side.”

Police said that on September 23, around 9:30 p.m., Popovics was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Seaside Heights.

Genell Mcinaw, 50, of Seaside Park, was later charged in connection with the incident. By a strange coincidence, it was later learned that Mcinaw was an employee of Shady Rest.

Bob Popovics was 75 years old.
