Ubisoft has just launched the first article in a series of developer updates on Star Wars Outlawspromising more improvements to come for the open-world game. Like… a plot improvements. There are so many fixes coming for so many core elements of the game that I’m starting to feel bad about playing the game and having a good time when it launches.

This first developer update message is written by Drew Rechner, who takes over as creative director now that Julian Gerighty is moving to The Division 3. Rechner emphasizes the big stealth fixes for some story missions and other fixes that Ubisoft has recently rolled out as being the result of fan feedback, but says there are still several “key areas” that the team wants to improve with future updates.

“The first key area of improvement in the game is combat, where we see a real opportunity to add more depth and excitement to the experience, further rewarding your tactics and precision,” says Rechner. “Our second key area is stealth, which is not only about improving the readability and consistency of enemy detection, but also giving you the choice of how you want to approach each encounter. Finally, our third A key area of focus centers around character controls, which means improving cover reliability, increasing responsiveness when climbing and crouching, and generally improving overall control consistency.

We’ll get more concrete details on what these updates will entail in the coming weeks, and “it will all culminate” in Title Update 1.4, which lands on November 21. alongside the Steam version and the game’s first DLC pack.

Rechner says developers will “celebrate and embrace player choice more than ever, whether that’s sneaking into encounters, using blazing blasters, or everything in between.” The biggest point of criticism against Outlaws’ gameplay comes down to how much it forces you to stick to stealth, and if the developers are aiming to make a change on that front, it feels like a pretty fundamental change in the underpinnings of the game.

All of these changes sound great, but they also disappointed me a little. My feelings about the game mirror Josh’s pretty well. Star Wars Outlaws Review – a 3.5 out of 5 star review highlighting the repetitive missions and stealth – but I had a good time with it when I played it from start to finish in the month since launch. But now it all makes me think that if even Ubisoft knows there’s so much room for improvement, was I an idiot for having fun? These fixes are a net positive, but you only get your first playthrough of a big story-driven game once, and knowing how much better Outlaws could be in a few months was disappointing to me.

Creating “solid” games isn’t enough when “players expect extraordinary experiences,” Ubisoft CEO said after Star Wars Outlaws.
