THE New York Yankees will not bring back Gleyber Torres for the 2025 MLB season.

Yankees refrain from extending qualifying offer to Gleyber Torres

The deadline set by MLB for teams to extend their qualifying offers to players in the final years of their contracts was 5 p.m. ET Monday evening. Yankees declined to extend $21 million qualifying offer Torres it was for him at the deadline.

Thus, the Venezuelan slugger will hit the free agent market this offseason. Torres had signed a one-year, $14 million contract with New York for the 2024 campaign and gave the Yankees a solid 80 runs, 15 home runs and 26 doubles behind a .257/.330/.378 slash line.

Torres will enter free agency after helping the Yankees achieve much success during his tenure

Torres was occasionally scrutinized for bouts of inconsistency throughout the year and surged after the Yankees’ American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals by recording eight hits and an .809 OPS in their ALCS rout against the Cleveland Indians before falling back to earth with most of his teammates during their 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

The 27-year-old talent helped the Yankees reaching the ALCS three times, including en route to this year’s Fall Classic. He will now seek a lucrative contract elsewhere as New York looks to use as much of its cap space as possible to lock down superstar slugger Juan Soto long-term.
