RCMP now say a collision that killed one person and injured three others on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Winnipeg was caused by a driver hitting another vehicle.

Police said further investigation by a collision reconstructionist determined that an eastbound car crossed into the other lane and struck an SUV in the other eastbound lane near 0 30 p.m. Wednesday.

The mechanical condition of the car was not a factor in the collision, RCMP said in a news release Friday. Police said Wednesday that the vehicles were side by side when the passenger side tire of the car – including the control arm and other mechanical parts – came loose and struck the SUV.

The SUV, which was in the southbound lane, entered the ditch and rolled. The 59-year-old Steinbach man who was driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 45-year-old man from the rural town of Hanover, was taken to hospital.

The car caught fire. The driver, a 25-year-old man from Calgary, was taken to hospital. Police said Wednesday that a vehicle traveling behind the other two struck debris from the crash. The driver, a 28-year-old Kenora woman, was taken to hospital.

The three people who survived the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP said Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the general area of Central Canada Park.
