Bengal court files rape, murder charges against Sanjay Roy following death of trainee doctor

A West Bengal court has filed charges of rape and murder against accused Sanjay Roy in connection with the death of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reported ANI.

Today, November 4, the Sealdah court in West Bengal charged Roy under several sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sahita (BNS):

– Article 103(1) (which states that anyone who commits murder shall be punished with death or life imprisonment, as well as possible fines)

– Article 64 (punishment for rape), and

– Article 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state in the victim).

He further indicated that the day-to-day trial will begin on November 11, 2024.

After the hearing, the lawyer representing Abhaya’s parents informed ABP Anandaa news agency, that the accused had applied for bail which was rejected by the court. Furthermore, the defendant’s plea was to provide him with the evidence, the same that was provided to the court and used to incriminate him.

Advocate Soutik Banerjee further said that the CBI has been asked to file a supplementary chargesheet and directed to complete the task before the end of 90 days of Roy’s arrest.

Advocate Banerjee said ABP Ananda“The CBI today argued that there was not just tampering with evidence, but there was a ‘wider conspiracy in the commission of the crime’ and ‘incitement to the crime’.”

Regarding the status of the other arrested people, he said the possibility of them being granted bail is zero and it is unlikely that they will be released soon.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is the prime accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case. Apart from this, Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal and former RG Kar medical college principal Sandip Ghosh were arrested by the CBI for tampering with evidence and illegally carrying out various activities at inside the college.
