Google TV’s new free streaming app has been removed and it won’t come back right away

What has a Google TV and you can no longer access the Freeplay application? The answer, it seems, is everyone.

Free play – not to be confused with that of the United Kingdom Free reading – is Google’s free TV application for American users, offering FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV) channels. The latest version of the Freeplay app started rolling out in September, but as 9to5Google spotted last week, it had disappeared from some users’ televisions.

It turns out that the problem is not isolated; Google is temporarily removing the app for almost all users.

Where did the Freeplay app go?

In a statement to 9to5Google, Google explained that it was recalling the app from all “affected devices” due to a crashing issue; The Google TV Streamer doesn’t appear to be one of the affected devices, but Google TVs are.

Google says:

While rolling out the new Google TV Freeplay guide, we discovered an issue that may increase crashes for some users. We have disabled access to the new guide on affected devices until the fix is in place. The patch rollout will begin soon and the updated guide will be available for all Google TV devices in the coming months.

By “all Google TV devices”, Google means those in the United States; there are no plans yet to make Freeplay available outside the United States.

Pulling the app is disappointing, because it’s actually quite good. But if the crash is severe and frequent enough to force Google to remove the app altogether, it’s clearly more serious than a weird system freeze. And you still have access to your free channels, so at least you don’t lose them either.
