Ask Chris Black: Which Non-Padded Coat Should I Buy?

Chris Black came back to the Strategist with a monthly column to answer all your burning questions, from very specific style concerns to workout and tennis sessions to foolproof host gift ideas that will have you invited back to the beach house.

I have to be honest with you, boss. I’m not sure what a “sports scientist” is, but it’s something we can avoid. As temperatures drop, the challenge of finding the perfect coat is real. I think I found a handful of different options. Hopefully we’ll scratch the itch.

I love the length of this bad boy. It will protect you from the elements up to your ankles. It’s not very warm, but you can throw a sweater or flannel underneath and be good to go.

This plaid raglan wool overcoat from Wythe in New York is more fun than the traditional black, navy, or camel color, but still very wearable for everyday wear. It also features a nice, substantial collar that flips up easily to protect your neck if the wind blows.

This jacket from London-based Carter Young has a comfortable, relaxed slightly cropped fit and features a two-way zip and storm flap. It also has plenty of pockets, because carrying a tote bag in cold weather really sucks.

It’s a warm down jacket disguised as a cool garment-dyed parka. It’s from Stone Island, so you know the quality is impeccable and the fit will be perfect. It’s waterproof and also has a hood, so you can honestly wear it anywhere.

I used to be anti-belt, but then I realized that, unlike jewelry, it’s an essential accessory that serves a purpose. Overpriced designer belts with a logo are tacky, so let’s go for something more subtle. Here we have many options for all occasions.

Western-style belts are all the rage because they are timeless and can be dressed up or down. This one from Maximum Henry is made from 100% Belgian vegetable tanned leather and comes in 15 colors. You can even monogram it!

Sid sets the standard for standards, and this belt is no different. Tobacco suede is the perfect shade to wear with jeans, and it will age beautifully over time. It features an unlacquered brass buckle that can be swapped out if you want to add a buckle with a little more style.

My father always wore a woven leather belt, so I have a special affinity for them. This one is made from sturdy British leather and has a solid brass buckle. It will look relaxed but not sloppy.

In appearance, this belt seems very simple, but the good Brits at Mr. Porter actually took care of the suede color options. Choose from a lovely rich green, subtle cream or navy blue to spruce up any bland pants.

Not surprisingly, I have a lot of feelings about dresses. I would never wear them at home (I’m hot), but they come in handy when I’m staying in a hotel. Of course, I understand the appeal and want you to lounge in something you feel comfortable in. We will avoid anything silky or sexy; I don’t think you’re going for Hugh Hefner.

Tekla is the gold standard for towels and sheets, but bathrobes are fantastic. Made from terry cloth, they have nice big hoods to keep that noggin covered. I love this blue with white stripes, not boring but not loud.

I love black watch patterns, and this dress is no different. I see you putting on that bad boy with cute slippers and grabbing the newspaper on your lightly snowed-in porch with a steaming cup of third wave coffee in hand.

If you want to make a statement, this dress is for you. Missoni is the family brand that has been around since 1953 and is loved for its patterns, like this zigzag pattern. This jacquard woven bathrobe has giant pockets, a belt and a hood: luxury has no limits.

This one is a little lighter, made of 50% natural linen and 50% cotton, which is easier to relax in. It has slit pockets and a belt matching the pattern and is available in a few colors. I have a weakness for olive.
