New Delhi/Ottawa: The Indian High Commission in Ottawa on Monday strongly condemned the recent violent disturbances outside a Hindu temple in Brampton, near Toronto, calling it “deeply disappointing”. The consular camp, co-hosted with the Hindu Sabha Mandir on November 3, faced major disruptions due to anti-India elements, raising concerns over the safety of participants and staff, the Consular Camp said. The statement further reveals that similar camps in Vancouver and Surrey were subject to attempted disruptions on November 2 and 3, highlighting the broader security concerns facing Indian diplomats, local organizers of the sites and the participants. As a result, the High Commission has warned that future consular camps in Canada will only be able to open their doors if local authorities ensure adequate security measures.

“In the event that these camps cannot be conducted safely, alternative arrangements will be made to provide these services, even if this may cause inconvenience to local applicants,” the High Commission said.

Tensions between India and Canada have escalated following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations linking New Delhi to the June 2023 killing of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has strongly denied the allegations.
