History

John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, is credited with creating the first sandwich in 1762. Known for his love of the game, Montagu was looking for a way to eat easily without the need for utensils or interrupting his game.

He would have asked that his meal, consisting of meat, be served between two slices of bread, thus allowing him to continue playing while keeping his hands relatively clean.

The concept quickly spread and the “sandwich” became a popular meal throughout England. Its ease has allowed it to spread internationally, evolving into countless varieties across cultures. Today, sandwiches are enjoyed in many forms, from classic charcuterie combinations to global variations like banh mi and panini.

How to make a sandwich?

Gather the ingredients: Start by gathering all the ingredients you’ll need, such as bread, cheese, meat, vegetables and sauces. Make sure your workspace is clean for safe preparation.

Choose your bread: Select the type of bread you prefer: white, whole grain, sourdough or any other variety. Optionally, spread mayonnaise, mustard, butter or ketchup on one or both slices. Feel free to explore other creative spreads to enhance the flavor.

Layer the vegetables: Add your favorite veggies, like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, or any veggies you like, to a slice of bread. This adds freshness and crunch to your sandwich.

Add protein: Depending on your preferences, top your sandwich with meat of your choice, such as ham or chicken. Distribute the meat evenly on the bread for consistent flavor in every bite.

Include cheese: Add a slice of your favorite cheese for added flavor and creaminess. Cheese can significantly enhance the taste and texture of your sandwich.

Finishing and heating: Place the other slice of bread on top, cut the sandwich in half then reheat it in a sandwich maker or grill. This step not only enhances the flavors but also creates a delicious texture.
