CUPE health care workers rally in Redvers, Saskatchewan.

Members of CUPE Sask Health Care Workers. and supporters gathered Friday afternoon outside a health center in Redvers to voice their concerns.

Over the past year, the facility has had to close several times due to unavailability of services, putting people in emergency situations at serious risk of not receiving appropriate care.

“The people who live in this community deserve a health care system,” said Bashir Jalloh, president of CUPE Health Workers Saskatchewan.

Adrienne Gardiner is originally from Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. and said the Redvers health facility was needed for his family.

The travel times to Regina are also not a good fit for Gardiner, as it only puts pressure on another region when services could be offered closer to home.

“Go ahead, you’re on a stretcher in the hallway.” There’s not enough to go around, that’s very concerning,” Gardiner said of the displacement in major centers.

Heading into the 2024 provincial election, health care was a major talking point for all parties.

CTV News contacted the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Government of Saskatchewan about the situation in Redvers, but did not receive a response by deadline.

The Saskatchewan Party’s platform says it will continue to hire more doctors, nurses and specialists to implement Saskatchewan’s Health Human Resources Action Plan.

Redvers area residents hope their voices will be heard in the election.

“There need to be facilities we can access in these small communities, it’s unfair to ask people to travel over an hour to get proper health care,” Gardiner said.
