Social media users mourn loss of beloved social media star Peanut the squirrel after his euthanasia Friday.

Peanut, or PNUT, was a rescue squirrel who lived with his owner, content creator Mark Longo, for seven years.

Tragedy led Longo to add Peanut to his family. In a Article 2022 published by USA TODAYLongo explains how he took Peanut in after seeing the squirrel’s mother get hit by a car. Peanut’s mother died after the accident which left him an orphan.

Together, the duo lived in their Pine City, New York, home with Longo’s cat Chloe. Longo created Peanut social media accounts that gave their followers a glimpse into their lives.

Peanut had amassed over half a million social media followers on Instagram, X, and TikTok.

On Friday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Chemung County Health Department announced that a squirrel and a raccoon were euthanized to test for rabies.

In a tearful post on TikTok on Friday, Longo informed Peanut followers of his death.

“Hey everyone. I don’t know how I’m going to say this. I just want to thank you all,” he said. “Peanut was the best thing that ever happened to us. And we got confirmation that ‘they had shot him.

While holding a photo of Peanut, Longo continued to speak.

“I want to continue to fight this fight as much as possible, but we need all of you to come together and help us,” he said. “Please continue to help us raise money for ongoing legal battles and for our nonprofits so we can keep the Peanut name alive.” Thank you all.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, a letter was written to Peanut and Fred, the raccoon who was also euthanized.

“It breaks our hearts that there are bad people who took you away from us,” said the the message is read in part. “We will never forget you, Peanut and Fred. You are forever in our hearts and your memories will guide us as we care for your family.”

Lawmakers turned to X to express their frustration after news of Peanut’s death broke.

“The NYS DEC needs a serious reality check on its ridiculously misguided priorities.” New York Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-NY) wrote in the position. “Instead of focusing on critical needs like flood mitigation in places like Steuben County, where local officials must struggle simply to obtain permits from the DEC to clean up debris-filled waterways, they grab pet squirrels. New York taxpayers deserve better.

A TikToker has given more details about the events that led to Peanut’s euthanasia.

“The owner of Peanut the Squirrel is talking about our government kidnapping this squirrel, the raccoon brother, and then just making him dead for no reason,” the user said. “They said four departments and a judge had to approve this removal and euthanasia.”

People who just discovered Peanut the Squirrel also shared their thoughts.

“This can’t be real” the user said. “Is this a joke?” Are they joking? They actually sent a SWAT team to go after a squirrel and a raccoon. Now I find out that Peanut the Squirrel apparently had a lot of followers on TikTok. So please, someone explain this to me. Maybe I don’t understand. Are our squirrels dangerous?

An X user demands that the names of those involved be revealed.

“Release all names involved in the authorization, seizure and then execution of Peanut the Squirrel and the Raccoon,” they wrote in the position.

Other social media users continue to share what they think of the government’s decision.

“For New York City to take its time, its resources, to do all this for a squirrel and a raccoon, that doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added. the user said. “As if I don’t understand what’s wrong with New York. You have much worse things to worry about than going after a squirrel, euthanizing a happy squirrel and taking it away from its family.
