Service on the green line restored after a water leak

Service on the green line was restored Saturday morning after multiple disruptions in the metro over a 24-hour period caused chaos for public transport users.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) indicated in an update on social media at 6:30 a.m. that trains were once again operational between Angrignon and Berri-UQAM stations. The service was interrupted at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The cause of the outage was a water main break early in the morning in Westmount. The pipe burst on Maisonneuve Boulevard, between Elm and Greene streets, near the Lionel-Groulx station, sending water gushing underground and onto the metro tracks.

“Emergency measures were taken to try to limit water infiltration and pumping as much as possible, but the problem persists, mainly due to the high flow rate of the aqueduct network,” indicated the STM in a published notice Friday evening on its website.

Hordes of people were forced to take a shuttle to the surface of the ground.

Here’s a recap of what happened to the green line:

The first service issue occurred at 5:37 a.m. Friday when authorities said there was “water infiltration” in the tunnel. Service was back up and running at 7 a.m., but the STM later said there was a “train breakdown” just before 9:30 a.m. Normal operations resumed about 15 minutes later.

Then, another outage was reported on the green line at 10:33 a.m. again due to water infiltration.

REM had an outage two days in a row

It wasn’t just the subway that was causing transit problems Friday. Strong wind gusts forced part of the REM to be out of service for part of the day, making this the second consecutive day of disruption on the tracks.

Bad weather disrupted service between Panama City and Central Station for two hours, with trains returning to operation around 2 p.m.
