Power outage: electricity decentralization solution in the event of collapse of the national grid – Vice-President, Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said Nigeria’s electricity decentralization is the solution to the country’s incessant power outages and meltdowns.

Shettima disclosed this during the recently concluded 145th National Executive Council in Abuja.

He denounced the recent power outage in northern Nigeria caused by vandals.

According to him, incidents of vandalism necessitate the expansion of the country’s energy infrastructure.

He stressed that the federal government will not stop encouraging subnational communities to produce, transmit and distribute electricity.

The Vice President added that joint efforts of the federal and state governments can make power supply instability a relic of the past.

“A robust economy is the backbone of every nation. Recent outages caused by acts of vandals remind us of our urgent need to expand our energy infrastructure. I think the governors here would agree that electricity decentralization is our way forward.

“We will continue to promote the constitutional framework that authorizes the constituent states of the Nigerian federation to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in areas covered by the national grid. Together, we can make instability a relic of the past,” he said.

This comes as the Transmission Company of Nigeria on Wednesday released restoration of power supply begins in parts of northern Nigeria States after more than two weeks of power outage.

In 2024 alone, Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed at least eight times, plunging the country into darkness.
