What you need to know

  • Google is preparing Pixel testers for its next Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1.

  • The company states that this release is intended to run until the first quarter of 2025, as this will be its feature drop in March 2025.

  • Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 dropped last week with system crash fixes, but Google recently confirmed that Android 16 will debut in Q2 2025.

Google is alerting all interested Pixel testers of its upcoming QPR test for Android 15.

The company went to Reddit to announce the upcoming launch of Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1. Google says this upcoming beta will “build on” the Android 15 QPR1 version, which is expected to arrive on devices in December. If you’re a Pixel tester registered through Google’s program, the company has detailed the steps to follow for those who want to stay or those looking to leave.

Google states that any registered tester who prefers to receive stable QPR1 functionality should “opt out of the program.” To avoid a complete data wipe on your Pixel, the post recommends users follow the remaining steps:

  • Skip/do not apply the downgrade OTA update. The OTA message will have “Downgrade” in the description. Unsubscribing will not result in deletion of data as long as you don’t do it Apply the downgrade OTA update.

  • If your device is offered the Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 update, don’t do it install the update. Instead, first unsubscribe from the programignore/do not apply the downgrade OTA update.

  • Wait for the final stable public release of Android 15 QPR1 (AP4A), which will arrive in December.

For those looking to stick around, Google says Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 will automatically download (likely as an OTA update) once it arrives. The post adds that this next QPR release is intended to be the March 2025 release. Additionally, Google estimates that Android 15 QPR2 will be completed in the first quarter of 2025.

Aside from “starting soon”, Google hasn’t given a specific date for when QPR2 Beta 1 will begin. However, with QPR1’s rollout confirmed in December, we may be looking at a January launch for the next one, but we will have to wait and see an official message.

The company deployed Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 last week, and this patch was full of fixes for system crashes. It arrived a little later than testers (including us) expected. Anyway, the update also delivered a blank screen fix for Google’s foldable phones which occurred when users unfolded the device.

More importantly, Google’s confirmed timeline for QPR2 Beta 1 could signal the end of the Android 15 beta cycle. The company dropped an important Android SDK updated yesterday (October 31) and with it the confirmation of Android 16 in Q2 2025. Given that Q1 runs from January to March, Android 15 testing might not go further than that . A Q2 launch for Android 16 allows us to play from April to June, as we might see a beta or two before launch.
