School rule! Kids ‘cultivate their roots’ at Concord High

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Concord High School is changing the way students learn in the classroom by moving away from traditional teaching methods.

Students grow roots by learning how to support a plant’s roots.

“It produces 25 pounds of fresh produce a month,” said Concord High School Principal Jill Snyder.

Concord High students produce fresh nutrients vertically using flexible farms. It is an efficient agricultural technology.

“Our school needs to be able to provide students with opportunities to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting,” Snyder said.

Students diversify in class by learning the science of hydroponics, which is growing plants in water rather than soil.

“It’s fun and different because I’m used to planting in the dirt,” Hayden Stanhope said.

From the floor to the cafeteria:

“It’s also rewarding to see people eating products you’ve created,” Stanhope said.

The products are created and consumed by high school students.

“We have a daily taco bar and use lettuce every day,” Snyder said.

Leveraging their education, indoor mobile hydroponics also allows students to grow fresh food year-round.

“The water culture in the towers is really effective,” Stanhope said.

The program continues to grow as more students gain an appetite for the course.
