Luton 1-1 West Brom: Josh Maja scores a nice backheel but Tahith Chong equalizes for the hosts to secure a draw | Football news

Josh Maja scored a nutmeg backheel for West Brom, but Luton hit back to secure a 1-1 draw to deny the Baggies a victory that would have put them level with the top two in the Championship.

Carlos Corberan’s side had scored just one goal in their last five matches and their barren streak looked set to continue as West Brom had only managed a shot – or a touch in the Luton box – very late in the first half.

But West Brom ended their mini-drought in style when Maja backheeled Karlan Grant’s cross through the legs of Jordan Clark and into the far corner to stun Kenilworth Road.

Josh Maja scores a nutmeg against Luton to give West Brom the lead before half-time

Luton failed to take advantage of West Brom’s profligacy in the first half, with Carlton Morris twice testing Baggies goalkeeper Alex Palmer. Boos rang out from the home fans at halftime, and they continued into the second half when under-fire manager Rob Edwards took off Elijah Adebayo and the impressive Tom Krauss just after halftime.

The boos were silenced, however, by a superb run and finish from Tahith Chong, who intercepted Alex Mowatt’s slow pass before firing a shot into the far corner on the hour mark.

Both teams had chances to find a winner, with Chong seeing a low shot saved by Palmer to try to seal the comeback. Daiki Hashioka also hit the post for Luton from a late corner, while at the other end Devante Cole’s acrobatic effort was palmed away by Thomas Kaminski.

But the two teams ended up in a draw which did not suit either of them. Luton, who have just three wins from 13, are out of the bottom three – but only on goal difference. West Brom, meanwhile, remains fifth.
