A Denver teenager killed a woman with an AR-15 rifle three years ago after a shootout when he was 14, jurors found Friday.

Remi Cordova, now 18, was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and attempted murder for the killing of Pamela Cabriales, 32, at a red light on West Colfax Avenue on February 20, 2021.

Prosecutors argued during a seven-day jury trial that Cordova opened fire after a minor accident and killed Cabriales in an attempt to gain status within the Eastside Crips gang.

Cordova’s defense attorneys sought to shift blame to another 14-year-old boy in the car and suggested that boy falsely named Cordova as the shooter to try to avoid his own arrest.

Cordova bowed his head as the verdict was read. He will be sentenced on December 12 to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

The jury began deliberating late Tuesday afternoon and delivered its verdict shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.

The man who was driving the car the night of the shooting – Neshan Johnson, then 18 years old – was convicted of second degree murder in the death of Cabriales last year and sentenced to 35 years in prison after jurors found he gave Cordova permission to start shooting.

That night, Johnson, Cordova and the other 14-year-old boy were stopped at a light when Cabriales pulled up behind them around 10:45 p.m. and crashed into the teens’ car in a minor accident.

Cordova, in the front passenger seat, then turned to Johnson and asked, “Can I blow up at them?” prosecutors alleged. Johnson, an Eastside Crips gang member with more status than Cordova, then gave the boy permission to open fire, they claimed.

Cordova got out of the car with an AR-15-style rifle, aimed at Cabriales’ SUV, and pulled the trigger, prosecutors said. However, the gun’s safety was on, so he had to lower the gun, remove the safety, then fire again, they said.

Cordova fired at Cabriales’ SUV at least seven times, hitting her in the head, prosecutors said. He got back in the car, shot two more times at the SUV from the car, and then Johnson and the two boys drove off, according to prosecutors. Cabriales, mother of a boy then 6 years old, died a few days later.
