Police hunt suspects, charge them with attempted murder after ‘targeted’ shooting at Flour Mill grocery store that resulted in serious injuries

Two people have been arrested for attempted murder after what police say was a “targeted” shooting in the self-checkout area of ​​the Notre Dame Avenue Food Basics Halloween party.

Greater Sudbury Police say shortly before 7:30 p.m. on October 31, officers were dispatched to a grocery store on Notre Dame Avenue in relation to a weapons complaint.

Police were advised that two individuals approached a man in the self-checkout, and one of the individuals shot the man.

The suspects and the man who was shot fled the grocery store.

The shooting victim, a 31-year-old man, later went to the hospital and was treated for serious injuries, but is not believed to be life-threatening.

When police arrived on scene, they located one of the people believed to be involved in the incident. The individual was taken into custody and charged, but it was determined that he was not the shooter.

According to information obtained during the investigation, police went to a residence on Baker Street. Upon arrival at the residence, officers saw an individual matching the description of the shooter outside.

The suspect fled on foot and was found by K9 Roy and his handler. Police also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

A 17-year-old boy is charged with the following offenses:

  • Attempted murder
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Pointing a gun
  • Discharge a firearm intentionally
  • Reckless use of a firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Violation of release order
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm

The 17-year-old was taken into custody overnight and will appear in bail court today, November 1, to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The second suspect, a 22-year-old man, was charged with the following offences:

  • Attempted murder
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Obstruct the police

The suspect, 22, was detained overnight and will appear in bail court on November 1 to answer the charges. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been confirmed through the legal process.

Greater Sudbury Police say this is a targeted incident as the individuals involved are likely known to each other.

Police say they would like to recognize and commend their officers and members of the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center for their quick and coordinated response to a high-risk situation where two dangerous and violent offenders were arrested and charged .
