POLL: Should older drivers take a new driving test after age 80?

Experts have called for older drivers to be forced to take mandatory brain tests to keep their driving licenses.

Campaigners investigating the death of a three-year-old child killed by a 91-year-old motorist have launched fresh calls for a new “cognitive assessment”.

This would mean motorists over 80 would be tested before renewing their DVLA driving license to stay on the roads.

Road users who fail the test will have their license revoked and will be effectively banned from the road.

Express.co.uk is asking readers for their thoughts as discussion continues to grow around the possibility of further rule changes.

The parents of three-year-old Xander Irvine, killed by a 91-year-old motorist, and activists have called for a new “cognitive assessment” to be implemented.

This would mean motorists over 80 would be tested before renewing their DVLA driving license to stay on the roads.

Road users who fail the test would have their licenses revoked and would effectively be banned from driving.

A precedent Express.co.uk A poll found Britons generally did not support the introduction of testing for older drivers.

A staggering 88.85 percent of respondents, or more than 9,000 people, said older drivers should no longer be subject to further checks from their 70th birthday.

Only 9.12 percent said they agreed with the policy, suggesting any new policies would not be welcome.

Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at DiscoverCars.comalso warned that introducing cognitive controls for older drivers could be a “controversial” move.

But he stressed the project would likely improve road safety, particularly for “vulnerable” road users.

He explains: “A recent survey recommends that drivers over the age of 80 undergo a cognitive assessment in order to renew their license.

“Testing older drivers is a controversial idea, but one that is under discussion or has already been implemented in various ways.

“Research funded by the European Commission has found that older drivers are at greater risk of losing their lives in car accidents, meaning that introducing a policy like this could help ensure that older drivers are vulnerable people do not put themselves in danger. »
