Bayern defenders Dier and Upamecano prepare for Union Berlin coach

MUNICH, Germany: Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany will wait until Saturday and their home match against visitors Union Berlin before deciding whether defenders Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano are fit enough to play, he said. -he declared on Friday.

Both players are nursing injuries, with Dier picking up his during Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Mainz 05 in the German Cup. Upamecano missed this match with a thigh injury.

Bayern are already without long-injured defenders Hiroki Ito, Sacha Boey and Josip Stanisic.

“It’s a shame when players are not available. I have 18 fit players, so I have 18 options for positions,” Kompany told a press conference.

“There have obviously been a lot of games over the last few weeks. I have full confidence in the other boys and the team.”

Kompany, whose team leads the Bundesliga title race with 20 points, ahead of RB Leipzig on goal difference, will decide on his fitness on Saturday, he said.

“The trend (for Dier and Upamecano) is good but I’m still going to take my time until tomorrow. But it’s looking good.”

He said Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer were both options for central defense.

“I could say it’s bad for us with two, three or four defenders missing. But I have full confidence in the other players,” Kompany said. “I hope they are fit, but otherwise I have confidence in the other guys.”

Bayern are unbeaten in domestic competitions this season and Kompany became the first coach in league history to see his team reach 29 goals in his first eight matches in charge.

But he said the Union would not be an easy task, with the Berliners having lost just once in the league this season and sitting in fourth place, five points behind Bayern.

“They have done well so far. They are up to the task and we will not underestimate them. But the game is about us,” Kompany said.

“We see that they are very strong in defense and counterattack. They are a team that knows what they have to do. But in the end, it is a home match for us.”
