Biden hits Philadelphia to tout record after causing Harris headaches

President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race in July, and in the final days before the election, he’s traveling to a key state — but not to campaign with the vice president. Kamala Harris.

Biden largely stayed away from Harris campaign efforts, sticking instead to White House smaller events and appearances as the vice president prepares to take office in January. On Friday, the president will tout his administration’s support for unions in Philadelphia, located in the swing state of Pennsylvania.

In a sea change, union members are increasingly seen as a bloc of compelling voters rather than the confident Democratic partisans they have been for decades. Former President Donald Trump had made significant progress with them this cycle, speaking enthusiastically about them on the trail and inviting Teamsters President Sean O’Brien to speak at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Biden has long proclaimed himself the most “pro-union” president in history, and he will likely echo that claim Friday in the Keystone State.

In October, Biden held events at the White House, which were seemingly adjacent to the Harris campaign’s goals, touting efforts during his administration. He was recently in Arizona to host an event to apologize for past treatment of Native Americans, he traveled to Baltimore to discuss his “Invest in America” agenda, and he came to New Hampshire to discuss his efforts to to reduce prescription drug costs. He was also in Wisconsin earlier this month and spoke about replacing lead pipes.

Although his activities were not executed in tandem with the Harris campaign, his errors and missteps along the way caused headache for her more than once.

Harris had criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) following several hurricanes that hit her state, but Biden undermined that by praising the governor’s management of the crisis.

The president also made a surprise appearance at a White House press briefing as Harris took the stage for a large rally. Biden’s visit to the press room was the first of his White House tenure and distracted media attention from Harris’ rally.

During a Sept. 11 visit, Biden donned a Trump hat given to him by one of the firefighters in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, intended to show “bipartisan unity” after the terrorist attacks that horrified the country 23 years ago.

The latest instance of Biden missing an appearance occurred earlier this week when he referred to Trump supporters as “garbage» during a mobilization call with Voto Latino.

White House communications went into immediate damage mitigation mode, saying the president was referencing a joke a comedian made about Puerto Rico at a Trump rally on Sunday.

Harris distanced herself from Biden’s comments, but Trump seized on the remark while showing up at his Green Bay, Wis., rally the next day in a garbage truck.

The president, now entering his final months in the White House, may have more trouble with these erroneous comments. THE Associated Press reported On Thursday, the White House press office edited the stenographic transcript in an effort to clarify what Biden said.
