Karnataka: Several injured as thousands gather to pray at Deviramma Hill temple in Chikkamagaluru on Diwali

Karnataka news: Chikkamagaluru witnessed chaos as several devotees were injured while scaling the 3,000-foot Deviramma hill temple, known for its annual rituals on Naraka Chaturdashi. The temple, nestled in the Chandra Drona hill range and open only during Deepavali, attracted a massive turnout despite continuous rains.

Devotees from across Karnataka braved the rains to seek the blessings of Goddess Bindiga Deviramma. The journey to the temple involves crossing the scenic roads from Manikyadhara and Arisinaguppe to Bababudangiri, but the dangerous conditions have led to slips and falls, leading to injuries among the crowd.

Security measures are not enough

Ahead of the festival, local authorities had safety measures in place, including installing ropes at key points to mitigate risks. However, the large number of visitors exceeded these precautions, contributing to the incidents.

Early estimates suggest a lower turnout than in previous years, but authorities expect an increase as Deepotsava festivities continue until November 3.

Celebrations continue despite challenges

The district administration, along with the police force, is closely monitoring the situation as the influx of pilgrims is expected to increase in the coming days. Although security remains a major concern, the dedication shown by the pilgrims highlights the importance of the Deviramma Temple in the Diwali celebrations in the community.
