Ethiopia decides to activate Fayda digital identification for domestic flights

Ethiopia’s national digital identity could soon be used as a travel document by people boarding domestic flights, following a memorandum of understanding signed by Ethiopian Airlines and the NIDP and reported by the ENA.

The MoU commits the partners to work collaboratively on the integration of Fayda digital identification into airport systems.

Ethiopian Airlines is also working on introducing biometric processing of passengers at different stages of the journey, from booking to boarding. The move aims to improve the passenger experience while increasing operational efficiency.

The government quickly implemented Fayda in various sectors for similar reasons, as part of a broader plan. digital government strategy. Recent examples include an integration agreement with the country procurement authority.

Abiyot Bayou, senior advisor to the Ethiopian Minister of Innovation and Technology, explained the current digital government strategy as the third stage of its transformation. The first stages involved applications developed independently by different institutions. Bayou refers to the newer integrated system as “GO”.

“When GO’s participation is in place, we will have the integration of payment system, ID card, registration and other data exchange systems at the center,” he said. declared.

For international travel, Ethiopia has been work with ICAO in preparation for the deployment of biometric passports.
