Why This Unusual EDC Approach Might Actually Be the Best Way to Carry Your Multi-Tool

At GP we talk a lot about EDC. In doing so, it is ridiculously easy to get caught up in the “everyday” part of the term, evaluating a knife, multi-tool or any other small accessory depending on its daily use.

As convenient as a standard, mini, or keychain multi-tool can be, perhaps nothing is easier to set and forget than a simple clip-based item.

Which leaves the other part of the equation, the carry, with a short lag when it really shouldn’t. Because just like a professional athlete the best capacity is availability (thanks to Bill Parcells), The most critical quality of an EDC item is a form factor that makes it easy to put away and forget about until you need it most.

Concrete example: the new Nomad Scout EDC Carabiner Multi-Toolwhich recently surfaced on Kickstarter.

Focus on the form factor

I’m digging this project for several reasons. First, Los Angeles-based creator Gabriel A. Keossian has done a good job organizing some essential tools. Among the seven it touts are a ferrocerium fire starter rod, a glass breaker carbide tip, a small folding blade, a 1/4″ hex bit adapter and, of course, a bottle opener.

Beyond these practical functions, I am even more pleased with the form factor: a carabiner. Because as convenient as a standard, mini, or keychain multi-tool can be, perhaps nothing is easier to set and forget than a simple clip-based item.
