Kevin Durant doesn’t think his NBA career will earn him a statue like Dwyane Wade

The topic of which NBA players deserve a statue outside an arena once they retire has been talked about a lot recently since Dwyane Wade statue unveiled outside the Miami Heat’s Kaseya Center.

In his speech at the statue reveal, Wade named three current NBA players who he believes deserve a statue after their careers are over: LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

When Kay Adams asked Durant about the shoutout, Durant said he was honored, but he doesn’t think he’ll win a statue.

“I highly doubt a statue of me will be placed anywhere playing basketball,” Durant said. “It’s usually these guys who have had Hall of Fame careers, with championships, you’ve been in a city for a long time. That’s not the case for me.”

Durant’s career is definitely different than every NBA player who receives statues. Durant played on four teams, winning two NBA titles with the Golden State Warriors. But NBA fans don’t usually think of the Warriors first when they hear Durant’s name: It’s probably the Oklahoma City Thunder, where Durant started his career and played the longest time. But he didn’t win any titles with the Thunder.

It’s different for Curry, who stayed with the Warriors his entire career and brought the team four NBA titles, and for James, who jumped between teams but won four titles with three different teams.

Only time will tell if Durant will ever win a statue outside of an arena, his career isn’t quite over yet.
