Mike McCarthy explains how the current system can improve Dak Prescott’s performance

Dallas CowboysHead coach Mike McCarthy recently spoke about the team’s plans to revitalize quarterback Dak Prescott’s recent play.

After throwing for 36 touchdowns and over 4,500 yards in 2023, finishing second in MVP voting, Prescott struggled in 2024, with just 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in seven games, including six interceptions in the last three games.

McCarthy emphasized the importance of the current system designed to support the quarterback, a philosophy he has adhered to throughout his coaching career.

No. 1, this system is based on the success of the quarterbackMcCarthy said. “That’s how I learned it over 30 years ago. So everything we do is built into that. Obviously the starting point for a quarterback to be successful is to run the football . So we can start there.”

A crucial part of this strategy is establishing a strong running game, something Dallas has struggled with all season. Currently, the Cowboys rank last in the league averaging just 74.1 rushing yards per game and just three rushing touchdowns for the entire season.

McCarthy believes that having a balanced offense can take pressure off the quarterback and lead to more pass-friendly situations.

“The starting point for a quarterback to be successful is to run the football,” he said. “So we can start there. “We need to get more production out of the running game, increase play-action pass opportunities. And then from there, take the next step and that’s pass protection, and obviously perimeter pass .”

To further improve Prescott’s performance, the Cowboys aim to increase the frequency of play passes. This tactic can fool defenses and create explosive opportunities down the field. McCarthy also stressed the importance of strong pass protection and efficient routing from receivers.

While acknowledging Prescott’s work ethic and dedication, McCarthy cautioned against overloading the quarterback with excessive responsibilities.

“It’s about allowing him to be successful,” McCarthy said. “If anything, I would be wary of asking him to feel obligated to do more than he already does. He just needs to really focus on his role as quarterback. He’s a great worker. He’s very diligent .And we will get where we need to get there.”

Dallas hopes to see its franchise quarterback in top form on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, where McCarthy, Prescott and the team will look to end a three-game losing streak.
