Utah HC ends losing streak with 5-1 win over Flames – The Hockey Writers – Utah Hockey Club

The losing streak is over for the Utah Hockey Club. After four games without a win, the team put everything in place to beat the Calgary Flames 5-1 Wednesday evening. It was exciting for the players, staff and fans, as the skid that seemed to last forever was finally over. Here are some takeaways from Utah’s win on Wednesday.

A better third period

On Monday against the San Jose SharksUtah played a solid first two periods and with a 4-1 lead heading into the third, it looked like they were going to end their losing streak. That is until the Sharks scored three goals in less than two minutes to send the game into overtime where they ultimately won it. Utah’s game against the Flames was the exact opposite of Monday’s game.

Utah was able to continue to put pressure on the Flames, notably Clayton Keller scoring a power play goal to give his team an even more comfortable lead. They also outshot the Flames 12-8 in the final period, which was another major problem in Monday’s game.

Last but not least, Utah kept their foot on the gas and didn’t get lazy. They continued to play their game until the final buzzer, which probably explains why they won the game against the Flames and not the Sharks.

The offense hasn’t dried up either. Several parts of the advance group showed up. Alex Kerfoot, Barrett Hayton and Keller all scored goals. Dylan Guenther and Nick Schmaltz also had two assists. It was a good performance reminiscent of previous matches this season.

To win a hockey game, you have to play the full 60 minutes. This is something Utah has struggled with lately. However, they finally did it on Wednesday and it ended their losing streak.

Lamoureux gets his first Aim

After injuries to the blue line, Maveric Lamoureux was recalled from the Tucson Roadrunners play for the team. The Canadian defenseman didn’t score a point in his first three NHL games, but he looked outstanding, making some smart defensive plays. It was only a matter of time before Lamoureux was rewarded with his first NHL goal and point.

Wednesday ended up being that special day for Lamoureux. Kevin Stenlund backhanded the puck to the former Roadrunner who used all his strength to get it just past Dustin Wolf. It was a big moment because it was also the first time a player scored their first NHL goal in a Utah jersey.

Lamoureux has impressed everyone in the organization so far this season. Although his call-up was meant to be temporary, he made a name for himself in the NHL. Paired with veteran Ian Cole, Lamoureux formed a decent defensive duo and also made Cole a better player.

It’s unclear what will happen to Lamoureux when Sean Durzi and John Marino return to the lineup. The addition of Olli Määttä this week makes the blue line more crowded. Even if Lamoureux is sent back to Tucson near the end of the season, he will play in Utah for now. With his already remarkable play, he has established himself as one of the future faces of the team’s defense.

The losing streak is over

Utah’s losing streak ends at four. All fans can now breathe as the pressure to end the skid is over. While it was a far cry from what the group experienced last season in Arizona, it was still a depressing losing streak filled with missed leads and no offense. Now the team can take what they learned in the last two games and use it for the future.

Utah will need everything it has for the upcoming road trip. They will take part in a four-game trip through the Midwest that will feature three teams that made the playoffs last season. However, if they played like they did against the Flames, they should be able to pull off some wins.

The important thing for Utah is that it can’t let its offense dry up. This was the main problem at the start of the losing streak. Although the offense became healthier midway through the skid with the return of Nick Bjugstadthat can’t be a problem, especially against teams like the Winnipeg Jets. They also can’t have bad third periods like they did in the second half of the losing streak. Utah must play a full 60 minutes, as all playoff teams do.

Even heading into a tough road trip, getting the win on Wednesday was very important. This puts the players and staff in a good mood and competition before the road trip and it doesn’t leave the fans in a bad mood either. Especially with Utah’s streak, it was crucial that they win against the Flames and they did.

Utah returns to .500 after its victory. Their next game is Saturday against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights have been one of the best teams in the NHL this season, currently sitting at 7-3-1 atop the Pacific Division. They are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
