Frustrated giants trying to stay focused

For most of his first five years with the New York Giants, quarterback Daniel Jones became an expert at suppressing his emotions outside of an occasional laugh or two.

But with the pressure not only on the team but also on Jones himself, who must start playing above the X’s and Os if he wants to retain his job as the starting quarterback of this century-old franchise, Jones n he not only approached this season with a chip the size of Manhattan on his shoulder, but he also let his emotions show.

Jones displayed his frustrations during Monday night’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially when the 2-point conversion after the team’s only touchdown went astray.

He was even more agitated on the final plays of the game, in which he and the Giants squandered a chance to tie the game.

“After the game and when it’s not going well, when you have a game like that, you’re going to be frustrated,” Jones told reporters on Wednesday.

“But at this point, it’s about going all out towards Washington, getting ready to play a good game, learning from the mistakes we made… making sure we prepare with the energy and the enthusiasm that we need to play a good match on Sunday.”

Jones, who said he tries to keep his emotions under wraps because he believes he plays at his best when he’s in control, thinks the team would benefit from harnessing his frustration and channeling it properly.

“I think so. I think everyone feels the same way,” he said. “I think not finishing a lot of these games and not getting the results that we want, yeah, that can push everyone to work harder and put us in a position to finish these games.”

Head coach Brian Daboll shares his frustration, but emphasizes that it’s important to stay the course and not stray just because things aren’t going as planned.

“You face things head on, the things you need to fix. Be consistent,” he said. “You don’t want to have bottoms, you’re going to have them.

“But you have to stay consistent in the leadership part. Communicate well. Review the things you can improve on, then really focus on the things you need to do this week.

“No one is happy with our situation,” Jones said. “I think everyone understands that we leave a lot of things aside. We have to play better, execute and win. So no one is happy about that. I think we are all motivated and determined to solve this problem and play well. So whatever emotion comes with that or how you have to prepare, I think the guys do it, and we’ll be ready to go.
