A road bridge in Surrey has been given a new name, after the public was allowed to submit suggestions.

Guildford Borough Council (GBC) launched a competition to find a name for the Ash structure in June and it was announced that the bridge would be called Chester Bridge.

The name refers to the Chester Arms pub which was based near the station and is named after the Chester family who lived in nearby Poyle Park.

All applications were examined by a jury composed of the prefect and director of a local school, a local historian and the curator of the ashes museum.

The bridge is expected to replace the need for vehicles to use a level crossing at Ash, which the council says closes “for up to 25 minutes per hour”.

The bridge itself is part of the Phase 5 traffic diversion for cars and light vehicles.

Work on the next phase of the bridge will begin on November 23 and is expected to be completed on January 24, 2025.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the railway tracks at the level crossing.
