Raptors’ second-round pick exceeds expectations as new starter

The Toronto Raptors may have found another gem in an upcoming draft like they have so many times before.

The very first pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, Jonathan Mogbo, former NAIA star player, has far exceeded expectations in just a few games. On Wednesday, he turned in his best performance to date in his first-ever start, adding 11 points on efficient 5-for-7 shooting, adding four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in 25 minutes played.

The Raptors ultimately fell short of victory, losing to a late surge from the new-and-improved Charlotte Hornets, but Mogbo’s performance was extremely impressive for his inexperience in the league.

Selected at No. 31, not much was expected of the 6-foot-6 forward, who primarily profiles as a big without a perimeter-oriented game. But he exceeded expectations, not only finding time on the court, but excelling in the minutes allowed.

It’s not particularly shocking that Mogbo has found a quick rhythm in the NBA – he’s long been a stat-stuffer. As a junior in San Francisco, Mogbo averaged 14.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting a combined 64 percent.

His defense, on which the hat has hung for most of his career, has remained solid. And the offense appears well ahead of schedule.

Mogbo will need to find some strengths to have a long and successful NBA career, but that will come with time as long as he produces on the court.
