Agatha All Along Episode 9 Ending Explained

Note: The following story contains spoilers from episode 9 of “Agatha All Along.”

“Agathe always” – which continues the story of Agatha Harkness and the town of Westview – ends with an origin story for her hit song “The Witches’ Road” and little answers.

The series saw Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) gather a coven of witches to help her travel the witch trail so that each of them could claim what they sought. Agatha was unknowingly joined by Billy (Joe Locke) – Wanda and Vision’s son who survived the spell at the end of “WandaVision.”

Long story short, the adventure at the center of the nine-episode series turned out to be Agatha’s ultimate scam gone wrong, thanks to Billy’s inherited power.

Here’s what you need to know about what happened in “Agatha All Along” episode 9, titled “Maiden Mother Crone.”

How did “Agatha All Along” end?

“Agatha All Along” ends with Billy realizing that the entire Witch’s Trail was created by him. He unconsciously took inspiration for each of the tests from the objects that littered his room: things like the wicked witch, the Oujia board, the seaside chalet from the first test.

Agatha now appears in her room as a ghost after sacrificing herself – or taking a “calculated risk”, as she puts it – in Rio (Aubrey Plaza) to spare Billy’s life. He asks her if the Road was entirely his design and Agatha confirms, saying that the boy actually did something interesting with his power unlike his mother.

That’s when Billy realizes that Lilia (Patti Lupone) and Mrs. Davis (Debra Jo Rupp) both died at his hands. He thinks Alice (Ali Ahn) is too, but Agatha kindly points out that she killed her. She also tries to comfort Billy by saying that he technically saved one of the witches from certain death.

We get a brief shot of Jen emerging from the ground on the outskirts of Westview after disappearing at the end of the final “trial.”

Agatha says Billy needs to get used to the feeling of losing a clan and he refuses before storming off. He heads straight back to Westview and Agatha’s basement, where the door to his self-created Witch Road still waits.

He begins to work magic on the door as Agatha reappears. She wants her locket where she kept Nicky’s hair back, but Billy reveals that the spell he casts will banish her once and for all.

“It’s time to move toward the light or toward the toxic embrace of Rio,” he told her.

Agatha begins to beg and plead for her life and tries to knock the locket out of Billy’s hand. She is finally able to do so after shouting to Billy that she is afraid to confront Nicholas. She floats to the ground and manages to put the locket back around her neck while Billy says he’s sure his son would forgive her.

“It’s when you say things like that that you make me think of him,” she replies.

The two greet each other and Billy admits that maybe being a ghost suits Agatha. He says maybe she could be his spirit guide and Agatha agrees that they make a good team – a Coven of Two. Billy closes the Witch’s Road gate and memorializes Lilia, Alice, and Mrs. Davis (who?) to the ground before opening another gate with Agatha at his side.

“Let’s go find Tommy,” she says before the credits begin.

Origin of ‘The Road to the Witches’ Ballad’ Revealed

The first half of the episode is long on Agatha and her son Nicholas. It begins with her giving birth and Nicky dying in the process. Rio shows up to take the boy and Agatha begs her. Death agrees that she can give him more time but doesn’t specify how much.

As Nicky grows up, he helps his mother lure witches to her with a variety of tricks and schemes so that she can siphon their energy and magic. She gets stronger but Nicky asks why she can’t be friends with other witches.

During their travels, Nicky begins to make up a song about walking on a windy road. Agatha joins us to bond and they end up writing the first version of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road.” Nicky even performs it in at least one town – and probably others – after changing the Windy Road to Witches’ Road.

Rio eventually comes to get Nicky and as Agatha buries her son and grieves, she sings their song and a young witch hears it. She heard the song and considered it true and now she and her clan want to travel the road to fulfill their desire. Agatha instantly realizes what this latest gift from Nicky means.

For generations, Agatha has used the song as a lure to get one group of witches after another to show up and let it undermine their magic. It works perfectly until the coven she gathered in Westview in episode 1. That time, just as she was ready to move, a door appeared thanks to Billy and his Witches’ image. Road was waiting inside.

So yes, “The Ballad of Witches’ Road” was a glorified fishing lure for generations of hapless witches.

Who is Tommy?

Tommy is Billy’s twin brother. He appears in “WandaVision” and is seen boasting about being super-fast like Wanda’s brother, Pietro. The penultimate episode of “Agatha All Along” appeared to show a boy being bullied and drowning in a swimming pool and it was this child that Tommy’s soul clung to.

This is probably the first place Billy and Agatha will try to go in search of his brother. Whether that means a Billy-centric spinoff or “Agatha All Along” season 2 remains to be seen.

Was there a post-credit scene?

No, there was no post-credit scene after the finale of “Agatha All Along.” The final moments hint that Billy and Agatha – now a ghost – are going looking for Tommy, but there was no tease other than that.

There is, however, already a confirmed story in the works that also stems from “WandaVision” and will likely have ties to that series. A Disney+ show focusing on what happened to White Vision after the events of “WandaVision” is in the works with Paul Bettany returning and directed by Terry Matalas.

All episodes of “Agatha All Along” are now streaming on Disney+.
