Yankees donate Game 5 tickets to banned fans for pediatric cancer patient and family

NEW YORK – A day later, something good comes out of the ridiculous behavior of two Yankees fans who removed a foul ball from the glove of Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts during Tuesday night’s World Series game at Yankee Stadium.

In addition to the two fans who were immediately kicked out of Game 4, their four season tickets for Match 5 were confiscated by the Yankees (with full refund) and given to a 15-year-old child with pediatric cancer in Bergenfield, New Jersey, the boys’ two brothers and mother.

Here are details on the boy from a Yankees release:

Calvin Young was one of about 80 children from families battling pediatric cancer invited to a “Kids Only” press conference at Yankee Stadium on September 13, which included Jazz Chisholm, Anthony Rizzo, Jose Trevino and Marcus Stroman answered questions from children battling cancer and in remission.
Unfortunately, while walking from his car to the stadium, Calvin became very ill and weak and was unable to attend the press conference or stay for the game. He was hospitalized again and required surgery. As he recovered, we let him know that we would be happy to have him at the stadium when he was well enough.
Rizzo sent him a video invitation. We followed up again (Wednesday) and he accepted our offer. He attended the fifth game with his mother and younger brothers.
Calvin has been a patient of the MSK Pediatric Sarcoma Team. He was diagnosed with DSRCT sarcoma in June 2023. Calvin and his family live in Bergenfield, New Jersey. This will be the first time either of them will attend a playoff game at Yankee Stadium.

The seats became available due to the shocking behavior of two Yankees fans, which occurred when Gleyber Torres led off the bottom of the first inning of Game 3 with a flyball down the right-field line. Betts ran toward the small area of foul territory and did a flip with his glove over the first row of seats.

As soon as the ball was rushed by Betts, one fan grabbed his glove with both hands trying to pull it off while another pushed Betts’ ungloved right arm so he couldn’t stop the interference.

After a few seconds, the ball came out of Betts and onto the playing field. A referee immediately sent Torres off for fan interference.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, but there’s always a first time for a first,” Betts said after the game, a Yankees win 11-4 this prevented a four-game sweep of the Dodgers.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was happy to learn that fans had been banned from Game 5.

“They shouldn’t be here,” he said.

Should fans be banned for life?

“I don’t know, but what happened last night was not acceptable,” Boone added.

Betts yelled at the fans who embarrassed him, but luckily it didn’t go any further.

“Every once in a while you come across a nearby heckler who makes a comment,” Boone said. “With our team, we try not to get involved in that. But guys get emotional sometimes and things happen.

“Certainly, some people cross the line from time to time in the stands. We try not to get involved.
