Calgary homes backing onto green spaces targeted in rash of break-ins

A series of break-ins into homes in southwest and northwest Calgary has police sounding the alarm to the city’s picturesque residents.

Eight burglaries were recorded in the space of a week.

All appear to have targeted homes backing onto “green spaces, ravines, parks and golf courses” in the southwest and northwest, according to police.

Incidents share an MO:

  • Police say all the break-ins happened in the evening, late on a weekday or on weekends, when no one was home.
  • The back doors and windows of houses were used for entry; And
  • Items including “jewelry, watches, handbags, sunglasses and cash” were stolen.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with relevant information to call 403-266-1234.

Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Meanwhile, the police are giving advice.

Police recommend locking high-value items, reducing visibility in homes and investing in home security, including cameras.

Police also recommend increasing outdoor lighting, getting to know neighbors and informing them of their planned absence.

Reporting any suspicious activity is also essential, according to police.
