Ontario woman killed in Brampton shooting called ‘full of life’ by family and friends

Friends and family remember a young Ottawa woman shot and killed in Brampton as being “full of life, laughter, happiness and pure joy.”

“On her worst days, she made sure everyone around her was always happy,” reads an online tribute to Khadija Charmant, a 22-year-old woman who was shot and killed in Brampton earlier this month .

Charmant, also known as Marsha, was sitting in a parked car with four other women and a man around 6 a.m. on Oct. 19 when police said another vehicle pulled up alongside them and someone started shooting.

The group was parked outside a Brampton recording studio and Charmant had traveled to the Greater Toronto Area to see her friend perform at a concert, according to the CBC.

The victim’s mother, Catiuska, said police believe the vehicle was mistakenly targeted and that her daughter died trying to protect her friends from gunfire, she told the CBC.

The victim’s friend, Angeliqua Marmontel, said Charmant was “known for taking care of her family and would take the shirt off her back to make sure she was always straight.”

Marmontel said Charmant’s death was hard on her mother and three siblings whom she left behind and began a GoFundMe fundraiser collecting donations for the family and funeral expenses, saying “anything helps right now.”

Family members shared the GoFundMe page on social media and raised $4,346 of a $4,000 goal. The CBC reported that the victim’s father, Mark Jackson, also died from gun violence during a shooting in Montreal in 2020.

No suspect or vehicle description has been released by police and investigators have not commented on any possible motive.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Peel Regional Police by calling 905-453-3311. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers, you remain anonymous, you never have to testify, and you could receive a $2,000 reward.
