Nintendo Switch update fixes nasty sleep mode bug

Here’s something annoying. You buy a new game on Switch or maybe need a big update to download. The process begins and then you go off to do something else. Only you come back later, once the Switch is in sleep modeand somehow it’s still not over. The good news is that the Nintendo device becoming finicky with downloads while idle was a problem.

According to a new system update, This persistent issue should now be resolved. This week’s firmware update 19.0.1 includes the following release notes via the OatMealDome dataminer:

  • Fixed an issue where GameCube controllers might not be recognized.
  • Fixed an issue where communication processes such as downloads might not work properly in sleep mode.

This is certainly a small fix, but one that has big implications for the usability and low-key quality of life of Switch players. The device’s WiFi already sucks, so pausing downloads in sleep mode was particularly annoying. Imagine The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom comes out at midnight. You run the install and you go to sleep and eight hours later it’s somehow always download?

The update’s other bug fix likely impacted far fewer players, but will still be a boon for Smash Bros. fans. The console recently had trouble recognizing GameCube controllers connected using adapters, a fairly common thing for fans of the platform fighter raised on its Melee incarnation. It looks like these connection issues are also resolved now.

Now all the Switch needs is a sleep mode that uses significantly less battery when no downloads are being made. The only thing worse than waiting for a game to install is returning to your Switch and seeing battery life in the single digits. Hopefully the Switch 2 is capable of harnessing the dark magic that fueled the PlayStation Vita’s power saving mode.
