What you need to know about State College’s new activities

A new business specializing in homemade frozen meals and freshly baked cinnamon rolls will soon open in State College — and the owner hopes to serve as an option for working parents and those looking for an easy meal to eat. prepare.

by Catherine” is expected to open next month at 1665 S. Atherton St., the former site of a Brewsky’s Bottle Shop. It’s owned and operated by Kathy Fisher, of Mifflintown, who credits her “horse-and-buggy Amish” parents for her hearty Pennsylvania Dutch cooking.

“My roots definitely come from the Amish people,” Fisher said, adding that everything is made from scratch. “That’s the kind of food they have.”

Kathryn’s will operate primarily as a serving business frozen and ready-to-prepare meals like lasagna, macaroni and cheese, stews, soups, pies, cakes, gluten-free options and other specialties. But it will also serve ready-to-eat takeout options like chicken salad and green salad. Additionally, on Fridays and Saturdays, Fisher plans to offer what has quickly become a farmers market favorite in her freshly baked cinnamon rolls.

There will be no seating at Kathryn’s, which will operate primarily as the company’s primary production facility. Kathryn’s will be open to customers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. No firm opening date has yet been set.

“I don’t consider myself a restaurant,” Fisher said. “We offer frozen foods, and it’s a menu that I try to stay true to Pennsylvania Dutch-style cooking, so you may not find fancy filet mignon – although we do holiday menus, so maybe on Valentine’s Day.”

Fisher’s business opened in Juniata County in 2020, born from the simple idea that she often froze meals for her husband and four children. She had originally planned to delay opening until the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, but a business mentor told her it could be an opportunity.

They were right. Fisher started his business by renting kitchens, delivering frozen food on Fridays and building from there. She now sells items through Central marketsan online farmers market with a storefront at the Nittany Mall, in addition to similar facilities in Juniata and Perry counties.

Fisher also sold her cinnamon rolls – and other items – at farmers markets in Boalsburg and North Atherton.

Although his business primarily specializes in frozen foods, Fisher isn’t limited to those. She plans to adapt to her customers, but for now she plans to offer individual hot, ready-to-eat meals on Fridays, likely derived from her frozen foods, so customers can enjoy them on site. And she plans to offer unique frozen dinners for the holidays, like a Slow Roasted Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings for a family of six (Cost: $164) or two (Cost: $68).

Fisher plans to make Kathryn’s his company’s primary production location. Her offerings have proven particularly popular in this area, she said, believing that might be due to all the two-parent working families in the area, which can make creating a home-cooked meal even more difficult. .

“This,” Fisher said, referring to his business, “is unique because sometimes it works for doing takeout — but the house smells so good after that. It’s like you did something. It’s a good meal.
