Teri Garr, the “young Frankenstein”, died at 79, Mel Brooks reacts

Actress Teri Garr, best known for her comedic roles, has died at the age of 79, her publicist Heidi Schaffer confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. Garr had worked with what seems like every iconic Hollywood director: Mel Brooks in Young FrankensteinSteven Speilberg in Close Encounters of the Third Kindand Sydney Pollack in Tootsie, just to name a few. She even starred alongside Elvis Presley in happy girl in 1965. However, her decades-long career in Hollywood slowed down in the 1990s when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002. She made her last on-screen appearance with the TV movie How to marry a billionaire in 2011.

Brooks, who cast Garr as Gene Wilder’s assistant Inga in Young Frankensteinremembers his “humor and liveliness” on set. “His ‘German’ accent made us all angry,” Brooks recalled in a tribute post on X. Michael Keaton, Garr’s Mr. Mom co-star, wrote on Instagram in response to the news of his death, “this is one the day I feared and knew was coming. Forget how great she was as an actress and comedian. she was a wonderful woman. not only is she great to work with with, but it’s also great to be there.
