Halloween is only a few days away, which means November is right around the corner. And November brings cooler weather, A time change and the official end of the historic and devastating 2024 hurricane season.

The first day of November also marks a month before the meteorological start of winter.

Here’s when winter officially begins, when and what the winter solstice is, when we hunker down and what you need to know about the weather forecast for this winter in Florida.

When does winter officially start?

Although the winter solstice isn’t until mid-December, the meteorological start of winter is just over a month away, on December 1, which is a Sunday this year.

According to a September report from the National Weather ServiceFlorida typically experiences a day or two of cooler temperatures in fall, but it begins to feel noticeably and consistently cooler in November.

“The first breath of cooler, drier air is usually short-lived – lasting only a day or two. Real cooling usually doesn’t occur until November,” the Weather Service website states.

The weather service predicts a warmer than usual winter from December to February 2025 for Florida and much of the Southeast.

According to Expanded 60-day weather forecast from the Farmers’ Almanacthe average November temperature will be cooler than usual this year, but only by one degree.

The average temperature expected for November in Florida this year will hover around 68 degrees (which is one degree below average) and about 3.5 inches of rain is expected in November (which is about an inch more than the average).

Daylight Saving Time for 2024 began at 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, March 10 for “Spring Forward” and will end, or move back this weekend, at 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, November 2.

What is the Farmers’ Almanac forecast for winter in Florida, 2024?

The Farmers’ Almanac, AccuWeather and NOAA all say winter will be mild and average in Florida this year.with slightly variable precipitation forecasts.

According to AccuWeather, there could be some cold spells in February if the polar vortex hits the eastern United States as it has in previous years, but nothing is certain this early in the season.

What is a solstice? Here is the short answer

There is two equinoxes and two solstices every year. The equinoxes occur in the fall and spring and are called the autumn and spring equinoxes. Each year they mark the first official day of spring and the first official day of fall.

The solstices occur in winter and summer and mark the shortest and longest days of the year, respectively. The summer solstice is considered the first day of summer and the winter solstice is considered the first day of winter.

“The winter solstice, or December solstice, is the point where the sun’s path in the sky is furthest south.” according to Space.com.

“At the winter solstice, the sun travels the shortest path across the sky, resulting in the least sunny day of the year and therefore the longest night.”

When is the winter solstice this year?

The meteorological end of summer occurred on August 31. The summer solstice was on a Thursday this year, June 20 at 4:51 p.m. EDT. The autumnal equinox was on Sunday, September 22 at 8:44 a.m. EDT.

The winter solstice will occur on Saturday, December 21 at 4:21 a.m. EST.
