Winnipeg Jets’ season-opening winning streak ends with 6-4 loss to Toronto – Winnipeg

There are no more undefeated teams in the NHL for the 2024-25 season.

The Winnipeg Jets found themselves in a big hole they couldn’t climb out of Monday night, losing 6-4 to the Toronto Maple Leafs as Winnipeg’s eight-game winning streak to open the season came to an end .

The Leafs came out of the gates firing, outscoring the Jets 11-2 over the first 11 minutes thanks in part to an early power play, but Connor Hellebuyck held down the fort.

But Toronto’s pressure paid off at 11:56 of the first period when the visitors opened the scoring. After the Jets failed on several chances to get the puck out of their own end, the Leafs sent the puck low where it eventually ended up in front of John Tavares for a first down.

It was the seventh time in nine games this season that Winnipeg allowed the first goal.

Toronto’s power play got a second chance later in the period thanks to a second penalty on Logan Stanley, but once again Winnipeg killed it, dropping Toronto’s power play to 9.4 percent this season at that time.

But the Leafs kept up the pressure and took advantage of a bad Jets turnover to make the score 2-0. Neal Pionk had the puck in his own corner and threw a backhand pass behind him that was collected by Max Pacioretty, who then served William Nylander in the slot. He beat Hellebuyck to make the score 2-0, just the second time in nine games that Winnipeg trailed by more than one goal.

Toronto ended up outscoring the Jets 19-6 in the first period and it didn’t take long for the Leafs to extend their lead in the second period.

The game started harmlessly enough when Hellebuyck recovered a shot behind his net. A short pass to Dylan Samberg led to a Samberg turnover on Toronto’s forecheck, resulting in a shot that Hellebuyck deflected, but as he tried to get in position to stop the rebound, Samberg got in his way, leaving a gaping net for Matthew. Knies scores just 56 seconds into the period.

Toronto’s assault continued a few minutes later. With most of the players on the ice fighting for the puck in the corner to Hellebuyck’s left, Nylander made a sweet pass to a wide-open Morgan Rielly who ripped it off the post and snatched it away for the score at 4-0 at 3:25. second mark.

With nothing going right for Winnipeg, Toronto’s Pontus Holmberg took a penalty to allow Winnipeg’s lethal power play to work. Kyle Connor beat Anthony Stolarz late on the power play to get the Jets on the board at 6:19.

Less than a minute later, the Jets were back on the power play thanks to a boarding penalty from Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Winnipeg had a few close calls, but couldn’t convert on the chance.

The Jets got a third chance on the power play in the period just after halfway when Rielly sent the puck out of play in his own end and once again Connor made Toronto pay when he made it a single pass from Josh Morrissey past Stolarz to do it. 4-2 with 8:35 left in the second half.

Any momentum the Jets generated disappeared as Toronto restored its three-goal lead. A point shot from Ekman-Larsson missed the net, but bounced off the end boards and trickled in front. As Hellebuyck rushed into his crease, not knowing where the puck was, Tavares threw it towards the net, which prevented Hellebuyck from making it 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Toronto had a 12-9 lead in shots in the second period and in the first 40 minutes totaled 31 shots to Winnipeg’s 15.

Winnipeg head coach Scott Arniel changed defensive pairings and most forward combinations in the third period, looking for a spark.

With another Toronto penalty, the Jets cut the score to 5-3 as Mark Scheifele picked off a cross-court pass from Connor at 7:36.

With 9:05 remaining, Toronto’s Simon Benoit was sent into the box for tripping Nikolaj Ehlers, giving the Jets a prime opportunity to cut into the Leafs’ lead, but they barely prepared themselves when Toronto killed.

With just over four minutes remaining, the Jets pulled Hellebuyck for an extra attacker and it paid off immediately as Connor fired one from the slot that was tipped in front by Gabriel Vilardi, making things very interesting for the 3:47 finals.

But the Jets failed to bring Hellebuyck back to the bench until the final 30 seconds of the game, at which point Tavares sent the puck up the ice into the empty net for a hat trick, giving the several thousand a goal. Leafs fans in attendance. last thing to be happy about.

Not only was the season-opening winning streak snapped, but the loss ended a 16-game regular season winning streak for Winnipeg, just shy of tying the NHL record.

They will look to start a new streak Wednesday night in Detroit.
