Manchester United fired head coach Erik Ten Hag on Monday morning after two years of speculation and poor performances.

The Dutch coach took the reins at United in 2022 following the departure of German interim manager Ralf Rangnick. During his two years in charge, Ten Hag spent just under $800 million on new players – the second most of any Premier League team during that period – but did not was unable to provide consistent results.

Ten Hag left United 14th in the Premier League, sandwiched between West Ham United and newly promoted Leicester City.

With the global coaching market tight and competitive, United opted to promote an interim manager internally rather than bring in an external figure, announcing that Ruud van Nistelrooy, United’s playing legend and current assistant manager, would lead the club until further notice.

Van Nistelrooy takes the reins with two years of experience as a professional coach at PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands – one year with their youth team and one with their senior team.
